About Us
African Centre for Reading and Development was founded in 2006; then it was known as The Reading Library Club. It was registered as a non profit organization in 2008.
The founder is Ken- Nkwonta Nkechi. She had previously worked in various capacities including being a language development teacher at Montessori International School, Port Harcourt, Nigeria for a fourteen years period.
At Montessori, she encouraged the management to set up a library for the nursery school section. She was directly in charge of this library until she moved on in 2006. During her time as the head of the nursery library, nursery pupils went home with two books
every week. Parents were glad that the vocabulary, reading habit and command of English Language improved tremendously.
Our Mission
African Centre for Reading & Development is an organization with a simple but relevant mission.
We equip public school libraries with books, organize educational competitions for schools, build and equip community libraries, establish mobile libraries and train interested individuals on library management. We are also involved in teachers training and development.
Books donated by Non-Governmental Organizations, corporate bodies, publishers, bookstores, private schools, individuals and the general public will be sorted and packed. These books will be sent to once-empty library shelves, in classrooms in public/ rural schools, in local libraries and into the hands of those who never held books before. When the books arrive, they will go to those who need them most. Children and adults who are hungry to learn, hungry to explore the world in ways that only prints make possible. Each book will be read again and again
